Metalwork: bespoke railings, staircases and locksmithing

· 5 min read

Metalwork is one of those jobs that make the difference in a renovation: a well-resolved railing, a light staircase or a steel structure can completely transform a space. Here’s what it covers and how to get it right.

What metalwork is

It’s the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke metal elements for your home, building or business: from locksmithing and grilles to load-bearing structures, railings, staircases and stainless-steel pieces. Unlike an off-the-shelf product, every piece is made for your space.

The most common jobs

  • Railings and handrails: lacquered steel, stainless or combined with glass or tensioned cable, for stairs, balconies and terraces.
  • Metal staircases: straight, spiral or floating; light and strong, combinable with wood.
  • Steel structures: mezzanines, reinforcements, pergolas and roofs.
  • Locksmithing: grilles, doors, gates and security railings.
  • Stainless steel: ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors thanks to its resistance to moisture.

Steel, iron or stainless: which to choose

Iron and lacquered steel offer the best strength-to-price ratio and take any colour. Stainless steel is the choice for wet or outdoor areas, as it doesn’t rust and keeps its shine with minimal maintenance. What matters is good anti-corrosion treatment and clean welds.

How to get your metalwork right

Look for a workshop that designs, manufactures and installs (you’ll avoid mismatches), ask to see previous work, and make sure the piece fits the rest of the renovation: finishes, colour and style.
